School Leavers Ability Programme

The School Leavers Ability Programme is Cumas’s transition programme for students with disabilities in the last two years of secondary school, supporting them to look beyond school and begin planning for the adult life they want to pursue.

Starting while the student is still at school, the programme creates time and space to explore interests, strengths and aspirations, experience different possibilities and identify a pathway for life after school. That pathway might lead to employment, further education or training, or an adult service.

School Leavers Ability Programme

Our team works with the student in school, at home and in the community, helping to turn their chosen direction into a practical transition plan. We also help bring together the people who need to make that transition work — ensuring the school, family or supporters, and the chosen college, employer, training organisation or service provider understand the plan and are prepared for the student’s move.

And the support doesn’t end at the school gate. The programme stays alongside the young person for up to six months after leaving school, supporting their transition into their chosen pathway and helping to address issues early as they settle into this new stage of adult life.

Because leaving school shouldn’t be a cliff edge. It should be a planned transition towards what comes next.
